John Michael Greer has served as the Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America (AODA, founded in 1912) since 2002. He has written and/or edited over twenty-five books on Magick, Druidism, ecology, mysticism, Hermetics, Qabalah, as well as several encyclopedias. The wealth and range of knowledge that the author has assimilated over his life is staggering, but what is more impressive is the simplistic philosophical ideas transmitted in his works. Rather than acting himself as an encyclopedia of technical or historical detail and presenting that to the public, Mr. Greer precipitates small simple truths from his experience and knowledge and presents the reader, especially in this work, with a set of well defined natural and mystical laws.
Mystery Teachings from the Living Earth uses the metaphor of a "Grassy Meadow" throughout the book to serve as the teacher of seven principles or natural laws. The author's style and the calm simplicity of language gives authority to a unified theme that the reader can almost tangibly experience when reading the work. Each of the seven laws or teachings are principles which are first shown to operate in nature, and then applied to the human and spiritual life. Each law then offers instruction for application, meditation and affirmations.
For those involved in earth-based paths of any form, whether it be general paganism, druidry, or even those who consider nature to be a reliable teacher, this book is highly recommended. Its clarity, unity of message, tone, and well thought out content make it well worth the read. Even those involved in more technical forms of Magick can find some basic underlying truths in each of the principles put forth so eloquently by the author.
